Speedometer/Tachometer cables

Postby nortnlvr » Thu Apr 04, 2013 3:21 pm

I'm looking for a Tach cable that will work on my 1969 Mark 3. I have a smiths gear drive, and the after market vaglia tachometer. I have the stock Speedometer and drive unit. Anyone have any parts sources or someone that can build me the cables?

Hey Bob, good to hear from you again. I took a break from the motorcycles for a few years to spend time with my sons. Now there all getting off to college, or the military and I need something to do. So I pulled out the bikes and aim to finish them this year. It was about 2.5 years since I touched the Mark 3 WC. The other day I put it on the stand cleaned the carb, hooked up a 12 volt battery, and kicked it once and it started right up. I'm reading 14 volts at idle, lights a 35 watt bulb no problem, A 65 watt bulb drains the battery down at idle. I'm going to leave the 35 watt bulb. I'm preping the tins for paint now, and hope to paint them this weekend. I'll take some pictures and post them. How are things with you? have we perfected the 12 volt conversion for these bikes? My computer died so I lost all my pictures of the Alt mod I did, and now I can't remember what I did. Are there pictures on this website somewhere? Do you know if the smith tack drive is 4 to 1 like the stock drive?

" I'm reading 14 volts at idle, lights a 35 watt bulb no problem, A 65 watt bulb drains the battery down at idle. I'm going to leave the 35 watt bulb. "

____ Sylvania more recently cam-out with a 65/45-watt bulb that should work just fine with your modified-alt.charging-system !
__ As I recall, your last headlight-issue was finding a bulb-holder/light-reflector unit to fit your headlamp-ring. _ Someone-else here faced the same issue and found a solution, so I hope you had been aware of that.

" have we perfected the 12 volt conversion for these bikes? "

____ I think it was back in 2008 or 9 when I instructed you to modify your alt.stator to have 2-pairs of wire-leads (in place of the original 3), and you connected them to a pair of full-wave rect.blocks so as to obtain max.power-output from the w-c.6-pole alternator. _ But you then had yet to obtain a voltage-regulator or a light-switch which would shut-down half of the available-power when the lights were not turned-on.

" My computer died so I lost all my pictures of the Alt mod I did, and now I can't remember what I did. Are there pictures on this website somewhere? "

____ All your pix are still on your PC's hard-drive and are quite possibly retrievable.
I'll look to see if I can find any of the pix you sent me and post them here after I do.
Below is one pic you sent me showing your fine-work with the pair of full-wave rect.blocks all nicely wired-up.

" Do you know if the smith tack drive is 4 to 1 like the stock drive? "

____ As far as I know, all t.drives have been that same ratio.

Hopeful-Cheers,
-Bob

I've got an excellent condition Mach 3 Tach cable that I would like to trade for a stock speedometer cable.

Bob, I found a bigger 12volt battery that fits nicely in the battery tray. They use if for electrid brakes, only $20.00. So I put the bigger bulb back in. The light is really bright now, and works well now, no dimming at idle.
