Cleaner and Wax on original Patina...

Postby krupp13 » Tue May 31, 2011 9:56 pm

Does anyone have any success with cleaning original Patina and waxing the surface without pulling any of the color with it?

Any products or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I never thought about that - it used to be that paste wax had a small component of rubbing compound in it. My bike has been repainted, but I'm anxious to read the replies to this.

I tried a little Turtle Wax - Carnuba, but it pulled some paint off. I then went and bought some Maquire's Cleaner Wax and this was better, but there was a hint of color on the applicator.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Also, what is the best for 50 year old Italian chrome? Mother's, Blue Magic?????

Any product with the word "cleaner" is going to take off some material. If you don' want to loose any of your patina, use only a wax product without the cleaner. 3M makes a professional line of products called "finness", which includes a glaze that would work. Also there are spray waxes that would coat the surface and require a minimum of rubbing to protect. My chrome gets 0000 steel wool with any (and you want the cleaner here) chrome polish. NO 0000 steel wool on the aluminum, though, terry cloth with aluminum polish
