No spark on Electrex system

Postby ADiMizio » Sun Mar 08, 2026 8:35 pm

At the risk of this being yet another "What is the best kind of oil to use" type thread.....

I've recently installed an Electrex ignition system on my widecase 250/ I purchased this a long while back in 2019....life got in the way, so even though its new, I'm not sure any warranty would apply here outside of the 12 months from date of purchase.

I've installed it as per the included directions and schematic. I'm running a battery on a 12v system. All wiring is new on the bike, and all connections checked in the plug in connectors, which I installed with a proper crimp device. I've scoured the internet and compiled as many "check this" type actions as are out there. All resistance checks in the stator, the CDI, the coil, the sparkplug cap are within spec. However, I have a high reading of 10560 ohms from the two source wires that come from the hall effect ring, part HBP160. I have read that on some of these to see a range from 423 to 516 ohms. I have yet been unable to get a response back from Electrex customer support to find out if this indicates a bad unit, and in need of replacement. I hate to throw parts at this, but no amount of kicking is creating any spark, so I am at wits end. The LED on the unit does flash when kicked through, but no spark, no matter how weak.

Asking if anyone would know if there are any tests, or if it is know what the resistance range is on a working unit so I can get my bike back on the road. BTW, I've owned this bike since 1980. Its very much a Bitsa, but its been well loved over all these years.

Hi,

Firstly, where are you? Electrex World are very helpful, but understandably, for a tiny outfit, they are snowed-under with enquiries, plus they recently lost their top man to illness. I can't help you with technical info, but I did have the pulsar ring fail on my system recently, which I was able to find thanks to the help of Nigel Lacey.

I can offer a suggestion though that Nigel told me: try running a wire directly from the battery to the ignition system to cut out any chance of a problem in the ignition switch or wiring loom; other than that I can only say double check all connections again.

Cheers,

Colin

I'm in United States, California, Central Coast. Electrex support has responded to 2 of my email questions, which I greatly appreciate. They have yet to get back to me regarding the reading on the pick up ring resistance. I've tried to systematically approach the problem, and understand that they can only do so much. I 've gone through all the usual and everything else checks out, so short of reinstalling the original points system I guess its down to trying a new hall effect ring.
