Help with 450 Desmo Valve Seals needed!

Postby Stratos23 » Sun Nov 20, 2016 5:35 am

Hello,

Does someone have some dimensions for 450 Desmo valve seals? These are the O-RING type seals rather than the cap style as fitted to later/twin cylinder models. Part number is 0400.17.030.

The reason for my enquiry is because I've received some new replacement seals from a certain Ducati supplier, but they are significantly bigger than the ones that came out. It could be that the old ones were incorrect, but I doubt it, since they were a good fit (the new ones seem too large for the recess in the guide).

OLD SEALS:
OD - 11mm
ID - 7.85mm
section - 1.7mm

REPLACEMENT SEALS:
OD - 12.7mm
ID - 8mm
section - 2.3mm

Here is a diagram of dimensions and a photo for reference.

Can I use a generic O-Ring - which would obviously need to take the heat of the application?

It sounds like a silly little issue, but it’s all that’s stopping me putting the head back together after a top end freshen and bike needs to be back on the road ASAP. Any info or advice would be hugely appreciated. Many thanks in advance,

Greg

They are the same for all desmo singles, 7.65x1.78mm, FPM (DuPont Viton) rubber, which is a high temp. grade material. You easily identify it by it's brown color.
The dimensions correspond to #011 ISO 3601-1, or OR2031 UNI standard. Your "replacements" are too thick, won't fit into the guide's groove.

Hello Hans,

That's twice you've helped me out of the dark with valuable and detailed information - hugely appreciated! You're an encyclopedia of information! I used the dimensions of the hub parts to sent me to make my own spacers up - they worked perfectly. I'm gradually working my way through the bike.

Funny, I've been meaning to email you for a while now - good to stay in touch with like-minded types around the world. I'll send you a more general news email directly, but interesting to see your Triking project - looks lovely! And curious that your girlfriend has a V50 too! We're still working out how to transform it aesthetically. We're thinking of fitting a Ducati 750 Sport tank and seat (bevel era).

And I just popped into my local bearing shop and they had the 011 Viton seals you referenced on the shelf!! I was quite surprised that this certain well-known Dutch Ducati parts supplier sent the wrong ones - along with a couple of other oversights.

Anyway, I'll be in touch,

Kind Regards,

Greg
