First ride of the season

Postby MotoMike » Sun May 08, 2011 2:41 am

Got my 450 out for it's first ride of the season today. I love riding this little motorcycle. had a bit of trouble though. when I turned on the key I had no power. Mine has an after market master battery switch mounted in the frame web on the left side. After some sorting I found that switch bad. The tail light was out as well and the brake light didn't work. found after replacing the bulb that a screw on a little also non stock terminal block on the rear frame rail had backed out a screw that clamped the brake light wire. Got those sorted, went through checking tightness of screws and bolts and found mostly tight due in part to my using thread locker on most of them. But the vibrating thumper conspired against me and still backed out the screws on the tail light lens which was missing when I got it back home after an hour out poking around. It was not an original light, so not too worried about it.

It really isn't a good fit for me, but I like to ride it just the same.

It really is a thrill to ride these old things. Takes a lot more concentration and skill compared to newer bikes. Mostly you got to remember to brake sooner. Keep it going. They're an endangered species.

I do love riding the old Duc. It handles very well and has enough power to be fun. it is just a bit small for me and I am sad to say that I have bum hip that stabs me for the duration of a ride on the 450.

The tail light is of the type that used to be known as a Lucas light. I recall places like JC Whitney used to sell them as universal lights. found a lense on Ebay for a few bucks hoping that it will fit. I think I will tap out the screw holes to a larger screw as the existing mount is worn. I knew better but went for a spin anyway.
