66 Monza red frame color

Postby Chuck » Sat Apr 13, 2013 2:23 pm

I would like to find a red spray can paint that is close to the red frame color on my 66 Monza, does anyone have a suggestion? If I need to have a professional painter do the painting what paint do I need.

Thanks,

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

I think you might need to buy some cans and spray a test card for comparison. Or, park next to red cars in parking lots and compare. If you find a red that's near perfect, write down the make and year of the car then go on-line and find what that maker called the paint color and what code they gave it. There are several on-line paint shops that will mix you a full aerosol spray can of paint from a car maker's color code.

I believe that the problem we all face is that paint from the 1960s wasn't coded like it is now, and the formulation and composition weathered, aged and bleached differently depending on a bike's storage and usage over the decades. For that reason what one person has found to be suitable for their bike may be a shade or tint off for your bike.

Thanks for the information about custom colors, I didn't know you could do that.

Chuck,

All the Monza frames I've seen are black. Is it factory red or a repaint?

Most any large well equipped retail paint shop can match colors. You need to take them a panel of the color you are trying match. Some shops can even make a spray can with the matched paint.
