Desmo mudgaurd clearance

Postby neandethal » Tue Jan 29, 2013 10:46 am

Hi,

after some assistance if anyone can help me.
Am converting my other Mark 3 into a Desmo rep, but am keeping the 19" front wheel for reasons of money saving, but am struggling to find sticky rubber. Does anyone know if you can get a 90/90 - 19 front tyre under the fibreglass mudguard, at present the guard has not been drilled t5o fit the fork leg sliders so can be moved up within aestetics,

grateful for any advise, other than fit an 18" rim :) cheers, Ian.

Hello Ian,

I have a yellow disc brake '74 that I can measure the tyre clearance at present (or the rim edge) with 18" wheel and Ceriani fork sliders.
You could work out where a 90/90 on a 19" wheel would be.
Maybe work it out from the axle up?

____ A 19" wheel on a "Mark 3" ? _ You must actually mean 'Scrambler', cuz all Mark-3 models came-stock with 18" wheels, (just as all the road-DESMO models did).

As the bike came to me it had 19" (3.00 x 19 tyre - avon deathmaster)front 18" rear (3.25x18 - Dunlop K70) rear, it is a late bike registered in 1975, and i note in Mick walkers book that the 239 had 19" front wheels, and when i spoke to Barry Jones at Classic Ducati he recognised the 19" front as a Mark 3, perhaps a UK thing?
It may be possible that this is a spanish bike but it has "Made in Italy" cast in the engine which i know is no guarantee! and the factory used any old bits left on the shelf towrds the end of the model life. the rims are both borrani alloy.

Apologies if i come across as obsessive, but most single owners are, i have the official Ducati sales brochure from the mid 1970`s, you all know the one, desmo one side , mark 3 the other, and guess what it states that the mark 3 has 19" wheels.

perhaps it was just a Uk thing.

____ Even so, I'm surprised ! _ I have to keep in mind that this w.site has many members from OUTside the U.S. (where perhaps anything is possible with Duke-models).
__ I'll check my old Berliner-brochures and my w-c.parts-book to double-check my presumption.

I've got one of the very last mark 3 450's with the 32mm crank pin in stock condition. It has 19 inch front and the wheels are radealli. They also came with either bars, or in the case of mine, with specific mark 3 clipons that incorporated the decompression lever.

I too run a 90/90 19 tyre on it.

Hi Machten,

Mine has the same clipons with built in de-compressor lever, and thanks for the 90/90 info, is that with fibreglass mudguard or painted Mk3?

Will take some happy snaps tonight of its part built state, gave myself 10 weeks to do as usually take years, all but mudguard off for painting, cant wait to get them back.

Hi Ian,

I just have mine in the stock state currently with the Mark 3 mudguard. There's plenty of clearance there for a 90/90.

Coincidently, I was just playing around on the weekend considering whether some time in the future I may do a light cafe job on it. Just putting this bump seat on it changed the lines to something remarkably like a mini 750 Sport, I thought. My friends wife looks unconvinced, however :D .
