1966 Sebring NC starts then immediately stalls

Postby mrkprsn » Mon Apr 28, 2025 6:32 pm

Hi, I have a stock NC Sebring with the original ignition and carb. The bikes was running. While out on a ride. It slowly started to die. It stalled and when trying to restart it would run for a split second and then die. I took the carb apart and cleaned everything out. It was already clean with no obstructions, still I cleaned it again. The bike still starts but then immediately stalls.

If this were you, what would you try next? Thanks..Mark

Aye Mark,

Spark plug, plug lead, coil, condenser, points, etc. Go through the whole of the ignition system, methodically, looking for breaks in insulation or faulty components.

I have a nasty suspicion that the insulation could be breaking down in the stator coils, with the current shorting to earth, when they get warm/hot. But, that will only be diagnosed by checking the whole system cold and then warm/hot, if you are able to get the beastie to run, to get it warm/hot.

I wish you well with antique Italian electrickery components. After 3 years of trials I am no nearer finding "WHY?" my Moto Morini 125H refuses to advance the ignition electrically, as it should, vexatious is the only polite term that I can use.

Good health, Bill

You might want to check the charge in the battery first. It may have enough to start it but not to keep it going. That might explain the gradual loss of power. If it is low, charge it, then test regulator and stator output.
