As we’ve had a couple of posts on carburettors, and as Jordan said, the SSI is a great looking instrument. I thought these pictures might be of interest.
I rebuilt this SSI 27 A for my 200SS, I made the bellmouth, top ring retaining clip, and mounting flange. which has on O-ring on the stub into the clamp fitting. Other parts have been re-plated,
I searched for ages for an SS2 float camber, but to no avail, I obtained a new top cover, float, and inlet banjo, and made the rest, machining the chamber from a billet.
But needless to say, after this exercise, I found one for the give away sum of £20. So I am now in a quandary, as to which one to use.

I run an Amal 1-1/2” GP on my Goldstar, which works well, but is happier at speed. The SSI being very similar to the Amal TT, which was the forerunner of the GP, is also an instrument best suited to the high end, and requires attention in setting up.
It has all the correct internals as listed for a 27mm SSI fitment on a 200SS, so I am hoping it all goes according to plan when the day comes.
I have made an adapter which fits in the jet holder with a transparent tube, to set the fuel height, But I am more than open to any setting up tips.

Wow! Very nice work on the carb restoration. How did you get the carb body to come out to the finish we see? Thanks for sharing!

I bead blasted the body with well used bead, (not so aggressive as new) outer surface only. I used Simonzi 5 wheel silver (rattle can) paint. I sprayed a test piece and left in petrol for a week, it survived ok, so it "should" be ok in use?

I was going to suggest using the plug under the air slide as a reference point for checking float level (bottom edge of plug).

But, Brian's SSI doesn't appear to have one. Checking some images, I see now that some SSI carbs don't use the plug.

Need to improvise, I guess.

Where'd you get those nice worm drive clips, Brian?

Thanks for the link Jordan,re the fuel level. There would seem to be variations in body design, re the plug. I checked out some other SS carburetters which I have, all are different. as is the one you posted. But both my 26A and 27A are the same, there is no indication of the plug. (so a little calculating required)
Re the hose clips, yes they are quite neat, I have had them for such a long time, I can’t remember where I obtained them, sorry.

Very cool seeing pics of all those SS carbs. Brian how did you get the hard wear on the carb back to new again. Are there new parts like the air screw, throttle guide/cable guide, etc shinny? Are they all new parts or did you get the cad plated? Anything you can share is welcome. I have a 27 and 29 that will need a restore. Ran all the bits through an ultrasonic clean but it discolored them. Cheers

The hardware on the carburetter is all original, re-plated after refurbishment and bead blasting. The flange clamp was chromed, the rest were zinc plated. (cad no longer available)
The different appearance in colours is probably down to the lighting, although the mounting flange is darker. (not original, and made from mild steel) is also zinc plated.
The float chamber inlet banjo bolt, fuel outlet stub, and body clamp, were made from stainless steel, and bead blasted, (not plated) which tends to look the same as cad.

Hope this helps
Brian

(this is not the re-plated jet)
I made this holder to prevent the jet getting blocked while being plated.
