250 Single Engine Numbers Question

It's been a long time since I posted. I've got a 1963 250 Scrambler project and a 1964 250 5 speed (Monza? I think) project. I've slowly been trying to disassemble, bag, organize and order parts for both of them.
The 250 5 speed has me at my whit's end with a stuck piston. I've tried everything for the past few years and it seems pretty hopeless. But that can be the subject of another post.
There is a complete 250 engine for sale and I'm wondering if there is a way to tell what year it is or what it came from or if it's a narrowcase or widecase by looking at the engine serial number. I tried looking in the Tom Bailey books I have and Googling it but the only table I could find online was pretty scrambled. The engine number is 102770. My best from looking at the scrambled table I found is that it is a 250 5 speed from 1966.
Also, is there an easy visual way by looking at a picture to tell if an engine is a narrowcase or widecase? Thanks!
Jon
