working on the bike with it on the floor is killing my back, so I'm looking for a work stand. Space is tight, and so is the budget. I'm thinking of getting a jack like this on ebay:

and putting a large piece of plywood on it, which I can reinforce with steel square tube (both of which I have) and using a chock to hold the front wheel, perhaps this:

there are a lot of people who have made homemade lifts and there is a lot about it on the web. you could buy one from Harbour Freight pretty cheap.

this one can be had for as little as $340 on sale. But not a space saver like you said you wanted.
something like this might also be a good starting point, and could be used for other things when not serving as a lift.

I would recomend a different wheel chock then you have pictured. you really want to be able to clamp the front wheel tight when doing certain things to stabalize the bike.
also i would recomend several mounting points for ratchet straps to secure the bike to the lift.
I you want to go really simple and cheap you could buy a chain hoist and mount it to your ceiling, lift the bike, place a wooden table underneath and lower the bike down.

that Harbor Freight table looks great. Here in Australia they are much more expensive. I'll look out for something like that. Yes, I'll add spots for tie-downs.
