the manifold from Sudco will only work with Allen head bolts: they are essential.

That's unfortunate, so you've decided to use that manifold or go with a stock one and rubber hose?
Hope it works out.

I used a butane torch on the studs and got both out. I've attached the manifold from Sudco using Allen bolts, and now the Mikuni seals nicely in the manifold.

However the b!@#$% still backfires thru the carb when I try to start it.

That sounds like ignition timing.....

You can always move the timing around until you get it to run, then incrementally advance it until you get kickback at the kick starter or until you notice detonation when riding, then retard it slightly till those symptoms go away. That's good enough for government work.

Worst case: cam timing

You can guerilla-check cam timing by checking the compression. If you feel good compression when you kick it (and you don't hear any scary noises that sound like valves hitting the piston), the cam timing is probably okay.
Put a Mikuni on it!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but seems better than starting a new one. Is there a reason that you could not have used a VM26-606 that has an integrated flange in lieu of the sudco flange? Does the float need to be closer to level? Thanks.

Amal Concentric carburettors with 2 inch spacing fit and work well on Ducati singles, fastened directly to the head without using a spigot adaptor.
If there's no interference with the Mikuni in question, it's probably OK too I'd think.

Thanks Jordon. I will look for an Amal, but if I can't find anything at a reasonable price I will go with the Mikuni. I'm not giving up on the Dellorto, just want to fast forward past carb issues right now. Still interested in hearing from anyone else on the VM26 with the flanges. Thanks.

Yes. I responded both times. I just checked and it appears I responded to myself on the second one, not sure sure why you didn't receive the first response. Thank you for the information.
