If it were the same diameter, there couldn't be a plain unthreaded portion for the top triple clamp to mate with.

Ah yes, that makes sense, my usually keen perception of the obvious has been failing me of late. I guess I'm just used to the much more typical (for me) type of setup where the top nut goes down into the top triple and provides the unthreaded portion for clamping to. I wanna say that the only bikes I own that don't use that method are the R/T and '75 Norton...

...especially with lots of loose balls...

One nice feature on the R/T's is the standard use of tapered rollers.

jbcollier wrote:Follow up question. The RT I am working on has two different sized threads on the steer tube. Approximately 26 mm for a thin nut to secure the steer tube into the head tube and then it steps down where the upper triple tree slides on and the top nut is roughly 25mm. Is this standard? It looks to be but it is not what is shown in the parts book.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi John
that is the correct setup .
on my RT the topnut was missing . i found out that a Kawasaki uses the same fine M25 thread .
so i got a aftermarked black anodised aluminum nut

Thanks Everyone.

The stem is pretzeled -- I've never seen one bent in some many different directions at the same time -- so we'll have one made if we can't locate a replacement.
