Got the motor back together now and after much faffing about got the timing set so she runs. Smoked a bit for the first couple of minutes and then all clear. Thanks for the tips on running in - any suggestions for fuel additives to compensate for unleaded fuel? I don't think I'll be starting to run her in properly until we get some decent weather, and I have a lighting problem anyway: main beam is very low output, so I must have got something wrong when I did the rewiring. Too cold to investigate, but great fun to ride (in the daytime) this little bike! It's been nearly thirty years since I last had a single (239) and I'd forgotten how great they are.
Once again, thanks all for the help.

Re: Heavy smoker
Hi Nick,
I have used Castrol Valvemaster plus with standard unleaded over Thousands of miles with no issues. Gives the plug and backs of the exhausts a brown look, but certainly no pinking or valve seat recession. It is very cheap as one small bottle treats enough petrol for a few thousand miles, and the bottle has an easy to use measure. Also you would have to be pretty cack handed to over dose to any extent that will case any problems. I have also used Millers VSP which seems to work every bit as well (perhaps running a bit cleaner), but works out more expensive as by volume you need to to add more.
