During reassembly I realized there are two retaining ring slots in the lower bevel gear shaft. Is one of these slots the "correct" one, or will it be a result of gear mesh and proper shimming?

____ Both are correct for THEIR-own particular intended use...
Your upper-slot (which is missing it's ring-clip), is intended to hold a clip which keeps the tower-shaft connector-sleeve centered over both lower & upper tower-shaft tip-ends !
