Mototrans 250 sob story

Postby Kawasakizx9r » Sun Jun 28, 2026 9:25 am

Hi, first post (ever). I've owned a mototrans 250 for around five years but haven't seen it for four years due to a so called repairer going bust on me and my bike being put into storage. The head developed a fault so I sourced one for this idiot, I also had him rebore it after supplying a new piston. When I eventually got the bike back the engine top end was in a box, black silicone everywhere, damage to the bike and parts missing. I put the head together last week and got it running yesterday albeit with carb issues and ignition timing issues. It's fitted with a Wassel carb and won't run off choke but I've got the original Amal so I'm going to put that on. I set the ignition timing static to 5 degrees btdc and rotated the points until the test lamp indicated the points were opening but it wasn't happy, I'll have a mess next week, it's too bloody hot in southern Spain right now. Does anybody know where I can source the lock (tab) washers for the cam and crank? Mine are in a very sorry state after the idiot finished with them. Thanks in advance, Mick

Hi Mick,

Sorry to hear of your woes; we have all been there. For your spares, try Recambio Usado, who are in Spain; you can order directly from their web site.

Good luck,

Colin.

Thanks, I use them already but they don't stock the lock washers, looks like I'm making them myself. I've tried loads of places online but drawn a blank. I've just spent a couple of hours working on it and got it running pretty sweet with the original carb but it's difficult to start when hot, I think it's the timing as it's kicking back a bit, it's like trying to kickstart an XL 500! It sounds a bit clattery but others I've heard do also so I'm not overly concerned. The hard work is almost done and I'm determined to save it.

Aye Mick,

The bits you are after, are available and of good quality from Mdina Italia, who now manage Edina and Nigel Lacey's spares business. I have no connection to the business apart from being a satisfied customer. The link to the tab washers is below:

Be aware that "tab washers" from other suppliers can be a lucky dip!

Pleased that you have the beast running.

Good health, BillR
