I guess there is no stock pile of dead Safas around that we could gut to install a modern battery. the boxes I've seen that replicate the look of the Safa look good in a photo, but wonder how they look in person. would much rather see one that had all the logo's molded in instead of a decal or sticker.

When did they stop using them in our Duc singles?

I've been asking around for an old safa from say a monza or sebring, I've seen guys pull a mold off mk3 toolboxes ect.
And make some nice stuff, using fibreglass. A safa battery with cover could be reproduced easily, remove the cover, attach the wires to the old type side posts drop in battery then strap down the cover and no ones the wiser. Do you think it'll work??

I think it could be done. I've looked at the rubber molds for similar purpose because the odd would require a split mold if it were rigid. several companies make rubber molding materials. I think it isn't actually rubber but has that quality. Don't know if it can take a fiber glass resin though it seems it should.

I don't get to ride my bikes that often and hate the seepage from wet batteries. I tracked down some AGM batteries and they are great. Same size as the Yuasa's I had been using and a hell of a lot cleaner. They just sit there with a battery conditioner and are always dry and charged.

AGM battery

" I tracked down some AGM batteries and they are great. "

____ A few years back when I first heard of that type of battery, I thought the same as you, but I soon after learned that AbsorbedGlassMat-batteries ought not be suitable for most motorcycles because they'd then be used only in the warmer whether and anywhere near the hot engine would only even more so temp that type of battery to succumb to it's weakness of being intolerant to excess heat.
Also, they really need to be used along with a strong voltage-regulator to keep them safe from excessive voltage which would also overheat & then begin to ruin them. _ And as that happens, (unlike a normal battery), they then accept more (rather than less) charging-current, which then causes a run-away/mad-circle effect leading to their overheated-death.
They might be okay on a water-cooled touring-bike but, I had dropped any notion of using them on a DUKE.
__ Perhaps they have since been much improved in regard to those weaknesses...
Can you tell us exactly what model of AGM-battery you've found that works for you and what bike you've tried it on ?

Hopeful-Cheers,

PLEASE NOTE... If this-post is not-yet signed-off with '-Bob', then I'm still in the process of completing it,, and if not also included with 'DCT' near bottom as well, then I may edit this post's wording at a later time. - Dct.Bob

Will do Bob. I am on my way out to my son's for a bbq :) and will get the details in the morning Downunder time.

The battery is being used on my 1974 Desmo Mk. 3 (pics on the gallry page) with an Accumate charger.

cheers,

bam.
